WordPress isn’t the best content management system (CMS) to use for a company Web site. In fact, there are many reasons why you should not use WordPress. My Dad taught me a long time ago that you need to use the right tool for the job. A Web site is one of those cases.
“…you can use a flat head screwdriver for a philips head screw…it’ll work… but eventually it will strip the screw”
I’ve seen many small companies start out by using WordPress. The simple ease of use is usually enough to convince many small company Presidents, CEO’s and … Continue reading Why WordPress is not the best solution for a company Web site
Everyone is talking about the new Google algorithm factor: Web site speed.
Some people are rushing to optimize graphics and even buy a faster server. This is absolutely hilarious to me. It’s really no big deal; or at least, it shouldn’t be. In fact, it will probably never effect your site SERPS – at all. Matt Cutts, one of the top SEO Gurus at Google, states on his blog that it is a minor factor one of over 200 factors that you should be considering.

“fewer than 1% of search queries will change as a result … Continue reading SEO: Google’s New Site Speed Factor
I’d like to mention one “on-site” search engine optimization factor that is often overlooked: “uniqueness”. Google in particular, with it’s addition of supplemental pages is noticing, with a very keen eye, the uniqueness of the pages it indexes from your Web site. Not only should your page content be unique, but your page titles & META tags should also be considered. This is especially true if you have a dynamically built/generated Web site, such as a Web forum, online store or social networking site.
To start to analyze the uniqueness of your Web site, you should first find … Continue reading SEO: Look at the Big Picture of your Web Site
For some time now, SEO gurus have attempted to figure out the Google Algorithm by testing vigorously the various on-site factors; such as keyword density, text to HTML ratios, linking structure, outbound links, etc. From these tests we, the SEO community, have gained some insight as to what Google would like to see, what it considers Spam, etc. We have been able to figure out what helps and what hurts are search engine rankings. A good list of these factors can be found at http://www.webconfs.com/15-minute-seo.php.
What I find so amazing about these kinds of lists is that nobody mentions the factor … Continue reading The Unknown Google SEO Algorithm Factor – Time
So many things are misunderstood about Google and their optimization algorithms. Unless you’ve been around for a while, some things seem like a big mystery. Why Blog Spamming Software can ruin your Google rankings (SERPS), is one of them.
Back in the days of early search engine development, people would use the latest buzz phrases to try to capitalize on recent events. For example, if Iraqi militants was the buzz of the week, then building a page on “Iraqi Militants” could potentially drive considerable traffic to your Web site. Google caught onto this very early into the search engines’ development and has … Continue reading Why Blog Spamming Software is Bad for Your Google Rankings
Several years ago I developed a huge online book store with more than 15,000 books cataloged across the site. It was a difficult task written in PERL with a MySQL database. Yes, PERL, it was a while back. The site was developed with Google in mind. Indexes of books by category, author, type, style, etc. were developed to act as fodder for GoogleBot, Google’s search engine spider. This method worked extremely well for several years, until recently.
Google has developed what they refer to as “Supplemental Pages”. Or in SEO talk, pages of lesser value in the eyes of Google. Google claims … Continue reading Supplemental Pages – How Google Beat Database Designed Web Sites!
Yes, it’s finally here, the “My Site Sucks” Penalty. Google has taken to penalizing sites that just suck. It seems that their guidelines should now include “Your site must have some kind of value to someone”, in order to get listed without a penalty.
In all seriousness, Google seems to be taking duplicate content much more seriously and penalizing a large number of Web sites. See Google’s Guidelines – Quality Guidelines:
Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
You might have already heard of the -30 penalty or the dreaded -90 penalty. You might have even worked … Continue reading Google’s New “My Site Sucks” Penalty
Some of the things I enjoy about Web design are the many different aspects of involvement. You can literally spend thousands of hours working with Web design, just to find out that you need to learn more. It’s a continuous cycle of learning that always keeps my mind asking more and more questions. It’s also the continuous change that keeps many Web designers from getting bored. There is always something … Continue reading Web Design / SEO / Programming
